RURALE: An offsite Multistory salon

What does it mean to talk of the countryside in the city?

The rural can offer an escape into arcadia, a route to a more authentic and autonomous existence. Designing, making, or dwelling rurally can mean being closer to seasonal, rooted practices that respect local traditions and knowledge. But the rural is also bound up with global forces, destructive industries, and harsh economic realities. This salon brings together key architecture and design practitioners to consider what city and country can learn from each other, and how re-framing the rural can help address some of today’s pressing challenges.

Multistory is a public programme in the School of Architecture and Design at UCA Canterbury organised by Charles Holland and Cat Rossi. Previous events have explored themes including BEAUTY, EARTH, ENERGY and MONEY. Each event address key challenges facing architecture, design, planning, and the environment through bringing together academics and practitioners representing a range of historical, theoretical, and practice-based approaches, aiming to capture just some of rich and diverse ways we can consider these themes.
