Once a ubiquitous sight, the tailored suit is now fast disappearing from many workplaces and wardrobes, to be replaced by a uniform of denim and jersey. But far from being reserved solely for bank managers, ushers and funeral directors, tailoring can be innovative, cutting edge and directional.
‘Tailored’ from the French word ‘taillour’ literally means cutter – tailored clothes are clothes that are cut to the human form.
During this nine-week project students have been challenged to understand the classic principles of tailoring and then incorporate them into their personal design aesthetic to create a contemporary and innovative eight-outfit collection. Researching personally inspiring concepts and immersing themselves in the creative design process both two and three dimensionally has resulted in very diverse, exciting products. Starting the technical process with just a pencil and blank pattern paper on day one, the students have gone on to draft, cut, drape, pitch, fit, alter and sew their own unique vision of contemporary tailoring.
