Bio
Jessica Voorsanger is an American artist living and working in London and Kent. She studied at the Rhode Island School of Design (BFA) and Goldsmiths College (MA Fine Art), and has had one-person exhibitions in London, New York, Edinburgh, Berlin & Turin. She recently exhibited at the South Bank Centre in London; and past projects have included Art on the Underground, Liverpool Football Club and Louis Vuitton. Jessica works in a variety of media ranging from painting, sculpture, installation, textile, mail art, film and performance. The projects themselves often dictate the medium that is most appropriate.
Jessica’s work has traditionally explored the concept of ‘celebrity’ within popular culture, through obsession, fans and media representation. Until recently, it has dealt specifically with the relationship between celebrities and their ‘fans’, and the ideology of fan culture. Through this investigation into popular culture, it has sent Jessica on to a different path. Through the exploration of costumes, Jessica has been making textile and fabric works, some of which are large scale wall hangings. Following this current line of enquiry, she has been exploring the relationship of fabric and site specificity. The fabric constructions explore texture, colour, pattern, cultural histories and identity. The large works do not have defined shapes and often continue to explore an aspect of interactivity that has always been present in her work while still entwining popular culture as appropriate.
