Hazel Cowie

Hazel Cowie is a qualified architect and researcher working across the architecture undergraduate and professional practice courses. She leads the Constructing for Equity modules in BA(Hons) Architecture.

Bio

Hazel is an educator, researcher and architect with a specific interest in housing and its commodification. Her PhD research explores her previous practice work and in particular looks at some of the ways that gentrification is manifest in regeneration projects. She is especially interested in the role that representation and surface play in practices of exclusion in contested areas. 

Hazel joined UCA in 2022 having previously taught at Newcastle University. At UCA her role is in introducing students in BA(Hons) Architecture to ways of building and in encouraging them to challenge norms and standard ways of doing things. This is through the module Constructing for Equity in first and second year and in supporting final year students in their technical design. She also teaches and mentors students through the PGCert Professional Practice in Architecture. At Newcastle University Hazel lead architecture design studios in second and third year as well as the Masters in Architecture and Urban Design. At UCA, she is also the Early Career Researcher co-ordinator for the school of Architecture and Design.

Research statement

Hazel’s research is based around her experience as an architect working in housing. Her PhD research explores the role that the surfaces and materials in contemporary housing design play in narratives of gentrification in housing-led regeneration. She is particularly interested in ideas of commodification, heritage and visual culture. Her work has been published in the journal sITA and presented at conferences in the UK and internationally.
