Course overview

UCA's International Foundation in Business will introduce you to the world of business within the creative industries.

With English language teaching included in the course, you will learn about marketing, management, branding and communications and, after exploring these areas, we will help you choose which area you’d like to specialise in at undergraduate level.

Along the way, you will work on exciting projects on your own, and in groups, and go on trips and visits to learn about the UK and its world-leading reputation in the creative industries.

The course is fully integrated with English language teaching, and you can also choose to study a 6 or 10 week intensive English course before this course, which will improve your IELTS score and is specifically designed to prepare you to study at UCA.

As part of our Diploma 2 Degree scheme, completing all units of this course successfully will guarantee you a place on one of our undergraduate courses.

We have built in a range of delivered classes, study skills and support within these units to give you the confidence to thrive in a new academic environment in the UK.

Introduction to Creative Business and Management
Throughout this unit you will learn about different styles, approaches and tools used in creative business and management historically and how these are developing in the present day. This information will be taught through practical workshops, lecture and seminar series, talks from industry professionals and first hand study visits to relevant UK businesses. Combining practical, entrepreneurial and contextual skills, you will use a combination of hands on field work and desk based methods. This unit will have a creative output of designing and pitching your own idea for a hypothetical business working in a small team.

English for Academic Purposes, Research and Study Skills
We have designed this unit to run throughout the whole course to support the natural and incremental development of all of these skills. We understand that they take time to master and that their integration is not a natural practice for internationally educated students. Central to this unit will be your research file and the course blog, which will form the foundations of recording, analysing and reflecting on ideas and methods in art and design practice. Alongside this you will learn how to write project proposals, an academic essay, give a research presentation and develop you listening and reading skills. 

Marketing, Communication and Branding
This unit will enable you to develop foundational knowledge in a range of Marketing and Branding skills specially for creative communication. The unit will also develop your creative idea generation. You will develop this range of skills by looking at examples of different marketing and branding practices, styles and tools and through hands on workshops that will explore digital tools, platforms and technology. Effective marketing and communication of a brand and business are essential skills to running or managing a successful business with a strong identity, that adds value and ensures longevity.

Creative Business Project
This unit involves researching, developing and presenting a self-directed creative business project. It is an opportunity to make informed choices in your subject focus, research, practical ideas development and final presentation. This unit will support you in confirming your interests within creative business, develop your digital fluency, design skills and engagement with creative technology. It is also designed to help you begin to develop a professional practice through applying self-directed independent learning skills. You will have the chance to finally confirm your area of interest and specialism within creative business for progression onto your BA course.

Our intensive English language courses are specifically designed to prepare you to study art and design at UCA.

The 6 week course will improve your IELTS by 0.5 and the 10 week course will improve your IELTS by 1.0.

The course fees for September 2021 and February 2022 entry are:

International Foundation:

  • £15,540 (standard fee)
  • £14,920 (full early payment fee)

International Foundation with 6 weeks English:

  • £17,640 (standard fee)
  • £17,020 (full early payment fee)

Intrernational Foundation with 10 weeks English:

  • £19,740 (standard fee)
  • £19,210 (full early payment fee)

These fees are correct for the stated academic year only. Costs may increase each year during a student’s period of continued registration on course in line with inflation (subject to any maximum regulated tuition fee limit). Any adjustment for continuing students will be at or below the RPI-X forecast rate.

All full cost (non-EU) students who successfully complete the Graduate Diploma and progress to a UCA postgraduate course will receive a £1,500 discount on the standard listed tuition fee for the postgraduate course. If the tuition fees are paid in full before enrolment, an additional 4% discount is applied.

Facilities

At UCA Farnham there is a dedicated studio for students on the International Pathway courses. You will also have be able to use the shared facilities at the campus including; digital media suites with both Macs and PCs loaded with design software; and extensive library.

Key facts

Key facts

A student-to-staff ratio of 15:1 means a high level of tutor interaction, so you can develop at your own pace. You will learn and practice specific art and design vocabulary in preparation for your undergraduate course. The course is highly practical and you will be in the studio every day, with further tasks developing not only your English skills but also your presentation, essay writing and referencing skills.

Support for the development of academic English skills is available throughout the course. You will develop your English language and academic study skills through an integrated programme which will prepare you for undergraduate level study. We also offer in-sessional English as additional support through our Library.

Teaching methods include studio work, one-to-one tutorials, lectures, seminars and practical workshops. We will introduce you to a wide range of approaches in the use of materials, methods and processes. Assessment methods will range from presentations and critiques to portfolio reviews.

There are opportunities for you to informally discuss any points raised in lectures or seminars through personal tutorials. You will also receive individual support and professional advice on personal and academic issues, including your next steps in your choice of studies or career. We will also support you in applying to UCA for your BA (Hons) degree course and will offer advice and guidance on visa applications and other pastoral matters.

Successfully completing all parts of the International Foundation in Business course means that you are guaranteed progression to study one of our undergraduate courses.

A key part of this course is working with you to identify the direction of your future studies. By working on a variety of different projects, you will be guided and supported to find the most appropriate undergraduate course to study after you complete the course.

Entry requirements

Course entry requirements:

You need to have completed 12 years* of schooling (with good grades) and show strong evidence of your ability to successfully complete the programme and progress onto your chosen degree.

*For countries where 11 years of schooling is comparable to this level of entry, this will be accepted.

International Foundation course:
You need to take an IELTS for UKVI test and achieve an overall IELTS score of 5.0 with 4.5 in each component.

International Foundation with 6 weeks English:
You need to take an IELTS for UKVI test and achieve an overall IELTS score of 4.5 with 4.0 in the listening, reading and speaking components and 4.5 in the writing component.

International Foundation with 10 weeks English:
You need to take an IELTS for UKVI test and achieve an overall IELTS score of 4.0 with 4.0 in each component.
