Film and Media Centre

As part of UCA’s ongoing programme of campus improvements, we are building a new Film & Media Centre on our Farnham campus. The new building is expected to be completed in December 2018.

UCA’s Film & Media Centre will be located on our existing UCA Farnham campus to provide specialist facilities for our film and media students. The two-storey development is designed to house the technology and specialist equipment needed to prepare today’s creative students for industry.

UCA’s successes in film and media

Oscar-winning film makers and animators are just some of UCA’s high-profile graduates who have enriched the world with their creative talents. Taught and guided by our experienced, industry-connected academic staff, our students can now reap the benefits of studying in a top 25 UK university.

  • Four UCA Farnham graduates have gone on to win Oscars for film and animation projects
  • We have one of the most successful film courses in the country, with graduates working on films such as Star Wars, Harry Potter and the Bond franchise
  • Our Film Production & Photography courses are ranked seventh in The Guardian 2018 university league tables

What will the Film & Media Centre offer?

The development is designed to house the specialist facilities required by today’s film and media students to prepare them for industry.

  • Large lecture theatre (257 seats)
  • Music technology facilities such as a recording studio, control room and dubbing theatre
  • Rehearsal and performance spaces
  • A high level of acoustic control, determined by the specialist functions of the rooms

Who will benefit from the new building?

  • The specialist facilities will serve students at our Farnham campus across our Film and Performing Arts portfolio as well as those on our Music Composition & Technology course.
  • The Film & Media Centre will also be available to all students at UCA Farnham to encourage course collaboration between creative subjects. Pre-degree, undergraduate and postgraduate students on courses such as journalism, animation and computer games design will all have access to the new facilities.
  • The wider local community will also be able to hire the lecture theatre for specialist events and meetings.

Concept and design

Architects Pascall + Watson designed the building, headed up by lead architect and UCA alumna, Samantha Brewer. Samantha took inspiration from similar buildings to ensure that the Film and Media Centre would be ‘A unique building with high quality technological internal spaces that form the learning environment for the creative brains of the future. It deserves to stand proudly out from the crowd, not blend into the background.’

A Travel Plan for the future

With the Film & Media Centre located on one side of our existing car park for staff and students, the new development means that the number of parking spaces will be reduced. In response to this, we have implemented new car park management measures and will be introducing a Travel Plan to reduce the number of vehicles in the Farnham car park and to promote sustainable travel across all of our campuses.
