Brief:

No more cake sales in the quad! The cake is dead, long live art!

As budding artists, you will need to devise various means of fund raising to support forth coming exhibition opportunities over the next few terms, and beyond. Rather than doing the tired old traditional cake sale in the quad, you are required to utilise your creative skills to come up with more suitable options. To kick start this mission you, as a group, will hold a silent auction of mini canvases (15cm x 15cm), kindly supplied by Windsor & Newton, who will be your sponsors for the event. All 1st and 2nd year students are required to work with the supplied canvas to create something for the exhibition and subsequent auction. You will need to hand in your canvas to Kate by Mon 28th Oct/Tues 29th Oct at the very latest. You can submit before this date!

Last year’s cohort managed to raise £3,320.00, which paid for a Year 1 show at New House Art Projects in Guildford and the future Year 2 London (next year). This meant that the show cost the students nothing and, in the process, they learn a valuable lesson about collaboration, practical and creative ways to raise funds, and they also got to exhibit along professional artists such as Gabriela Giroletti, Chris Orr, and your tutors! Ahem. Lucky them. YOUR AIM THIS YEAR IS TO BEAT THEIR TOTAL!!!!

You can approach this brief through any means – the canvas doesn’t have to be painted on, it could be picked apart, reconfigured, flipped, reversed, woven into, re-stretched, transformed. One year Amanda baked hers in a pie! Yum. Or just paint on if you fancy that approach! It’s up to you, but just try to do a good job of it, as ultimately, our aim is to make sales to raise funds. This activity should also be kept secret – only you should know which canvas is yours as the whole point of the auction is to keep the artist’s identity hidden until sales have been agreed. The guessing game will increase the likely hood of sales. Write your name and title, if the piece has one, on the back of the canvas, and don’t show anyone.

Alongside your group effort and range of professional artists have kindly agreed to contribute a canvas. This includes UCA Fine Art staff and practitioners associated with the department. Here are a few who have confirmed their involvement this year:

So, take your canvas and get thinking and making. Consider your viable options and stay away from cake sales ok? It’s your responsibility to advertise this event and raise interest. You’ll need to invite friends, family and existing contacts to bid, but you’ll also want to increase local interest to draw potential buyers in. We will also need people to do the following:

  • Run the @ucastretched Instagram page
  • Distribute flyers locally and in London
  • Photography of the canvases with lot numbers for Instagram
  • Install the exhibition
  • Set up an email address and keep a log of the bidders as they register and make bids
  • Contact winning bidders and take money
