Playback

The exhibition comprises an innovative display including, a series of individual touch screens and cinema-style projection which enables visitors to select and watch from a veritable feast of work.

Playback is the result of a joint initiative by Arts Council England and Channel 4 to develop young people’s talent and provide them with entry points to the arts and creative industries. A selection of these were made and produced by students at UCA Farnham. Playback provides a unique opportunity to experience the creativity of some today’s young aspiring filmmakers.

Originally designed to be broadcast as part of Channel 4’s Random Acts strand, the majority of these films have been presented on Channel 4 television or online. 

Random Acts Network Centres were set up to run the regional programmes in London, North, South West, South East and Midlands.

Jamie Wyld
Jamie Wyld is Director of videoclub (videoclub.org.uk), an artists’ film and video platform that delivers programmes across the UK and internationally, including exhibitions, screenings, commissions, residencies and professional development programmes. Videoclub was established by Wyld with artist filmmaker Ben Rivers in 2005, since then it has grown into a global organisation, with activity taking place in China, Taiwan, S Korea, Argentina, USA, and across the UK at venues such as Whitechapel Gallery, ICA, Nottingham Contemporary, CCA Glasgow and FACT (Liverpool).

In 2013, he established ‘This is Wyld’, a creative agency working with the cultural sector and artists to help with production, fundraising and curating. Prior to this he worked at digital culture agency Lighthouse (Brighton), as Programme Curator, delivering on- and offsite projects with artists such as Kutlug Ataman and Laure Prouvost. Before this he worked as Digital Arts Programmer at Showroom Cinema (Sheffield), and as Visual Arts Officer for Arts Council England in London and SE England.

Carol Swords
Carol Swords is an art and design curator working mainly in the public sphere for the last 25 years. She has curated over 120 exhibitions of both emerging and established artists, specialising in explorations of the built environment and the city. She is passionate about learning and public programmes. Carol is currently curator of Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery, formally PM Gallery, where she is curating the programme for 2018 when it reopens after undergoing a major redevelopment.  Carol has a unique perspective on what it takes to deliver a vision built on trust, collaboration and, sometimes, bloody mindedness!

David Blandy
David Blandy examines the cultural forces that inform and influence him; working with the image in the digital world, highlighting our relationship with popular culture and investigating our relationship with the narratives that shape us. Blandy is seeking to destabalise conventions, to subvert an idea of normality and point at the emancipatory possibilities that surround us. He has exhibited at venues nationally and worldwide such as Tate Modern, London; Kiasma Contemporary Art Museum, Helsinki, Finland; The Baltic, Gateshead; Turner Contemporary, Margate; Künstlerhaus Stuttgart, Germany; MoMA PS1, New York, and Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai, China. He is represented by Seventeen Gallery and his films are distributed by LUX.
