Situations change, minds change, ambitions change. And when that happens, Clearing is often a great way forward.
With the opening of Clearing now on the horizon, we know you might have questions about how it works and how to make the best of the process – especially this year.
So, we’ve put together our top tips to help you prepare so you can enter Clearing with confidence and get onto the course you want to study.
Our tips for Clearing:
1. Find out if Clearing is for you -
Continue your research on what Clearing is (visiting this page is a great start)! Have a look at what options are available to you, and which universities are offering places. You don’t have to be in the UCAS system to apply to us – we’re open to hearing from students from all backgrounds. Just give us a call and we can have a chat about what you want to study.
2. Consider using Clearing Plus
This year, UCAS are launching a new service, Clearing Plus. This tool enables some applicants to be matched to appropriate courses that are similar to the ones they have already applied to at some universities that have availability. You'll be able to express an interest in courses you are matched to, and have the option to allow the university to get in contact with you directly.
But it’s important to bear in mind that Clearing Plus is only open to those students currently studying for the following – A-Levels, BTECs, Scottish Highers, Access to Higher Education Diploma, or International Baccalaureates.
Also, not all universities will be using the service, and you will be matched based on the assumption that you still want to study a similar course to the ones you originally applied to, so we’d recommend checking with universities directly about your chosen course. Even if you don’t get matched to us through Clearing Plus, we’d still love to hear from you.
2. Find out what different universities are like -
Don’t wait until the last minute – be proactive and think about your interests in advance. Check which universities offer the courses you want, and get all their numbers ready to go. Check them out on social media and check their websites, too. Our social media is full of our students’ work, and you’ll find lots of useful videos about what it’s like to study here on our YouTube channel. You can also use our UniBuddy service to chat to current students and find out what they think about studying here by visiting the Ask Our Students page or using the links on our course pages.
3. If you haven’t visited the university before and want to, find out if you can (or visit virtually) -
All our campuses are closed right now because of the situation with COVID-19. But we do have a Virtual Open Day page, where you can explore in your own time. And on our UCA Live page, you’ll be able to tune in to special broadcasts by our student ambassadors and staff, who will answer common questions about university life.
4. Get all the help you can -
Your form tutors in college will be around on Results Day, so will your friends and family. Don't hesitate to ask them for some help if you're trying to get everything ready – second opinions can be really handy.
5. Be an early bird –
Once you have your results and have decided which universities to speak to, contact them as soon as you can. We know this is a big decision – it’s important not to rush into anything. However, being more pro-active will improve your chances of getting onto the course you want.
6. Get your personal details together -
Make sure you have your results, qualifications, UCAS ID (if you’ve got one) and a list of the courses you’re interested in in front of you when you contact our Clearing Team. It’ll make it much easier for them to help you if you can provide all the details they need.
7. Contact us yourself -
We know the process might seem stressful, and you might be nervous, but it’s really important that it’s you that contacts us, and not your parents, family members or friends getting in touch on your behalf. We’re here to help you make the right choices, and we promise we don’t bite!
So please, contact us, and let’s see if we can get you on a course that you’ll truly love.
