Gabor Stark

Gabor Stark studied architecture at the Technische Universität Berlin and Mackintosh School of Architecture, Glasgow School of Art. He convenes the Master of Architecture (ARB/RIBA Part 2) course at UCA Canterbury School of Architecture.

Bio

On graduating from the TU Berlin Gabor worked on architecture and urban design projects as a freelance architect in Berlin where he co-founded his own practice, tx - büro für temporäre architektur in 2000. From 2000 to 2005 Gabor taught architecture and urban design as a guest lecturer and assistant professor at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weissensee and the TU Berlin. He joined the University for the Creative Arts as a senior lecturer in 2007. Gabor initiated and led the MA Urban Design course from 2013-2019 and currently convenes the Master of Architecture course at UCA Canterbury School of Architecture. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Research statement

Gabor’s research focuses on temporal and programmatic aspects of spatial transformation processes. He successfully participated in national and international design competitions and has conducted research projects commissioned by the Senate of Urban Development in Berlin, the German Federal Ministry of Traffic, Building and Urban Development and the German Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning.

Gabor’s practice, research and teaching agenda comprises temporary uses, cultural landscapes, participatory planning and programmatic urbanism. Parallel to his urban studies Gabor explores the liminal space between architecture, art and public urban space. Varying in terms of their respective contexts, formats, genres and durations, Gabor's art projects are rooted in the concepts of site-specificity, collaborative place making and the activation of the civic urban realm. He has realised projects, published, exhibited and lectured about his work in the UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Lithuania and Russia.

2006-2010 Wriezener Freiraum Labor (Open-Space Laboratory).
