Heike Löwenstein Shingle Street (Work in Progress)

Over the past four years, Löwenstein has been using this technique to photograph the coastal community of Shingle Street, in Suffolk.  Intrigued by what first appeared to be a quintessentially English fishing village, through developing relationships and conducting interviews, Löwenstein became fascinated by the differing personal histories and desires contained within this small village.
 
Carefully orchestrated and manipulated, Löwenstein’s pictorial compositions are printed on vinyl and are attached to a large rotunda-like structure constructed from scaffold material. The imposing, immersive and physical dimension of Löwenstein’s work is reminiscent of historical panoramas and history painting, and offers what she refers to as a “phenomenological experience of place”, in order to consider the construction of identity and representation.
 
Biography
 
Heike Löwenstein is a photographer, educator and researcher. From 1989 to 2004, she had a successful commercial career working between Berlin and London with numerous national and international clients such as Stern, OTIS, Dorling Kindersley and BMW. As a practitioner, she has also exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibitions in Berlin, London, Glasgow, New York, and Dresden and has had her work published in several books. Löwenstein has an MA in Hypermedia Studies with merit from the University of Westminster and studied photography at the Bayerische Staatslehranstalt für Photographie in Munich 1986-1988. She is currently Course Leader for Photography at the University for the Creative Arts (UCA), Rochester.
