Over the past twenty years, second year students on BA (Hons) Film Production at University for the Creative Arts, Farnham (UCA) have been challenged to make work on their own, based on personal experience. This unit began its life as ‘Personal and Political Filmmaking’ and included screenings of radical and experimental filmmaking which were intended to provoke and inspire our students. Over time, its title, ‘Personal and Political Filmmaking’ seemed to fall out of fashion and was replaced by ‘The Other Cinema’.

The Other Cinema presents the breadth of work produced over the past two decades and as recently as 2017. Sometimes humorous, sometimes painfully touching, these films explore a wide range of themes and subject matter including grandparents, divorcing parents, psychosis, homesickness, body image and falling in love. These films use a range of genres from dance films and experimental films, to ‘found’ footage and documentary. Despite the limitations of budget, student resourcefulness and innovation combine to produce a compelling collection of short films
