UCA, Farnham participates at Being Human Festival, which aims to disseminate research through public engagement.

Being Human is led by the School of Advanced Study at the University of London. The festival works in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy to support humanities public engagement across the UK. 2023 Festival’s theme is Rhyme and Reason.

UCA’s programme for the festival explores the property of Rhyme and Reason in an exciting and emergent way. It includes an interactive and immersive exhibition at the James Hockey gallery and supporting programme, comprised of workshops, performances and activities to take place at UCA well as at  South Hill Park partner organisation.

UCA researchers (including PhD students and tutors) investigate how objects, sounds, movements and creations are part of what makes us human, explore and share their ideas with the public and local community.

UCA aims to share, connect and exchange knowledge with local communities and schools to increase awareness of what art practice-based research means, by providing free accessible inclusive events, with a particular focus on music and animation, materials techniques and mediums.

Loop: The History and Future of the Loop, at James Hockey Gallery, Farnham, 10 November 5-7pm. This screening and workshop, will look at animation toys, apps and exploration, and will explore pattern, rhythm, and contemporary and historical technological tools. FREE BOOK HERE

Phonotrope Workshop, at James Hockey Gallery, Farnham, 14 November 5-7pm. In this participatory workshop you will use pre-prepared paper discs with marked intervals, which can be drawn onto by participants and played back on a record player, recorded and played back with a camera and projector. Sonata of the Soul (Performance) A group of local musicians, GCSE, A level and UCA students collaborated with a professional string quartet and academics from the University for the Creative Arts to explore the connection between music and memory. The participants are invited to bring in their ideas; be that text, music notation, as played on an instrument, sung, or a graphic representation of a memory and with the help of the Gildas String Quartet and composer and academic Dr Harry Whalley, the workshop will structure and develop these ideas into a new piece of music.  Join us for a performance of “Sonata of the Soul’ a new piece created by workshop participants exploring the concepts of music and memory.
