In this architectural summer school, students will work together to build a temporary pavilion from paper and card. They will be introduced to key elements of spatial design, using different drawing and making skills to explore space and structure and develop their own collaborative projects. How can we use everyday materials to make a temporary structural installation? This summer school is suitable for students interested in both architecture and interior design.

This Summer School is suitable for students in years 12, 13 & FE equivalent with an interest in creative subjects - you need to have a passion for Art and Design but you don't need any previous experience and you don't have to be studying a creative subject at school/college to take part. Our Summer Schools aim to be inclusive - creativity is for everyone! If you have any special requirements (learning needs, access needs, disability support, preferred pronouns, allergies etc) then please let us know on your application form and we will try our best to make sure your experience with us is comfortable and enjoyable. If you'd like to ask us anything about the summer school in advance of applying, please email outreach@uca.ac.uk

During this three day Summer School you will explore techniques in Art and Design. This Summer School provides a great opportunity to explore new creative disciplines, find out more about creative careers and pathways, and add to your portfolio of work.

During the Summer School you will take part in creative workshops, meet practising artists and student ambassadors, and take part in a group exhibition on the last day of the event.

All creative materials required will be provided free of charge, and support with travel is available for target students (see below or get in touch to find out more).

The Summer School is free to attend and open to all students in years 12, 13 & FE equivalent living in Kent and Medway.

This activity is provided by the Outreach Programme which aims to increase the number of young people from underrepresented groups and areas accessing higher education.

Priority places will be given to students who live in targeted postcodes and those who attend a partnership school or college.

Any remaining spaces will be allocated in line with the eligibility criteria.

Deadline for applications: 23:59 on Sunday 26th June.

Disclaimer: UCA reserve the right to cancel or amend this activity at any time prior to the event. This event is in-person and will be subject to institution and government Covid-19 safety guidelines applicable at the time.

Useful information

UCA’s Summer Schools are suitable for students who are studying or have an interest in creative subjects and would like to develop their skills and portfolio.

The aim of the course is to provide an opportunity for young people to access free art and design tuition from a higher education institution to support them in the development of their portfolio of work. It's also designed for students who may not otherwise have the chance to access such an opportunity.

Priority will be given to applicants who meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • are the first generation in their family to study at higher education level (e.g. Degree, HND, HNC)
  • are currently eligible for Free School Meals
  • come from a neighbourhood with low overall progression rates to higher education (determined by postcode using POLAR 3 data)
  • are from a black or minority ethnic (BAME) background
  • are in, or have lived under local authority care
  • have caring responsibilities for a family member
  • have a disability
  • attend a HEON, KaMCOP or KMPF partnered school (a list of eligible schools is included below)
  • live in HEON or KaMCOP target postcode area
  • have not previously attended a UCA Easter or Summer School programme
  • are studying without the support of family
  • are an unaccompanied asylum seeker/refugee
  • a child from a military family
  • from a gypsy, roma and traversal community

Allocation will also be based on your personal statement, where we would like to see an evident passion for the subject and an interest in studying a creative subject at a higher level.

This information will be gathered via UCA’s Summer Schools application form and will be assessed by the University’s Outreach Manager and Outreach Officer.

Once the application deadline has passed, we will consider all applications against the priority criteria listed above to determine who will be offered a place. A decision will be sent in writing to confirm whether a place on the programme has been secured, and successful applicants will be asked to confirm their place in writing. Where the programmes are oversubscribed, unplaced applicants who meet the criteria outlined above will be kept on a waiting list and allocated spaces should they become available. UCA reserves the right to cancel or amend Summer School activities at any time prior to the start of the club.  In the event of any changes, applicants/participants and their parents/carers will be notified accordingly.

If an applicant decides not to accept their offer, they must inform UCA staff via email as soon as possible so spaces can be reallocated where possible, by emailing outreach@uca.ac.uk
