HEON Illustration Saturday Club
for Years 10 & 11

Saturday 6 November - Saturday 27 November, 10am - 2pm each Saturday at our Farnham Campus. This FREE Illustration Saturday Club is open to students in Years 10 & 11 who meet HEON's criteria. The deadline for applications is now closed.

This 4-week illustration club will be run by one of our Creative Workshop Tutors, Sophie Allsopp, an experienced picture book illustrator and lecturer. Each week we will cover a different aspect of illustration, to introduce you to the whole subject, and give you a taste of what it is like to study illustration at university.

Week 1: ‘LINE - how drawings don’t have to be realistic.’ Our first session is an introduction to illustration, and concentrates on the use of sketchbooks and exploring different drawing techniques.

Week 2: ‘COLOUR & SHAPE – how colour adds meaning to illustration.’ This session we will explore the use of colour to add emotion to our work, using collage techniques to build illustrations.

Week 3: ‘TEXTURE & PATTERN – how to add extra interest to images.’ This session is about using our observational skills to create patterns and textures, using these as a basis for illustration.

Week 4: ‘CHARACTER & NARRATIVE – how illustrations tell stories.’ For our final session, we will explore how to build characters and tell a story in a sequence, using previously explored illustration techniques.

Each week will consist of brief talks, fun short tasks, followed by a longer, more in-depth project. Come to learn more about the subject of illustration, what you can do to build your own skills, enjoy being creative and exploring new techniques in a university campus environment.

Sessions will run over 4 consecutive Saturdays on the following dates/times:

Saturday 6 November, 10:00 - 14:00

Saturday 13 November, 10:00 - 14:00

Saturday 20 November, 10:00 - 14:00

Useful information

UCA works with the Higher Education Outreach Network (HEON), a consortium of universities delivering activities to promote progression to Higher Education within specific wards across Surrey and North East Hampshire. We offer outreach activities to pupils in Years 9 to 13, as well as impartial information, advice and guidance on Higher Education.

Our Saturday Clubs are suitable for students who are studying or have an interest in creative subjects and would like to develop their skills and portfolio.

The aim of the course is to provide an opportunity for young people to access free art and design tuition from a higher education institution to support them in the development of their portfolio of work. It's also designed for students who may not otherwise have the chance to access such an opportunity.

Eligibility for these specific HEON events are determined by postcode. For our most popular events, places will be prioritised for students who live in target postcodes. However, this will vary depending on uptake. To see if you’re eligible for any of HEON’s events, please enter your/your student’s home postcode using the look up tool.

Allocation will also be based on your personal statement, where we would like to see an evident passion for the subject and an interest in studying a creative subject at a higher level.

This information will be gathered via UCA’s Saturday Clubs application form and will be assessed by the HEON Manager, UCA Outreach Manager and Collaborative Outreach Officer.

Once the application deadline has passed, we will consider all applications against the priority criteria listed above to determine who will be offered a place. A decision will be sent in writing to confirm whether a place on the programme has been secured, and successful applicants will be asked to confirm their place in writing. Where the programmes are oversubscribed, unplaced applicants who meet the criteria outlined above will be kept on a waiting list and allocated spaces should they become available. UCA reserves the right to cancel or amend Saturday Club activities at any time prior to the start of the club.  In the event of any changes, applicants/participants and their parents/carers will be notified accordingly.

If an applicant decides not to accept their offer, they must inform UCA staff via email as soon as possible so spaces can be reallocated where possible, by emailing outreach@uca.ac.uk
