Language requirements and support

To study at the University for the Creative Arts, we require evidence of your English language ability to meet the requirements for your course.

If you want to take one of our courses, you must have a certain level of English language skills. The requirements are different, depending on the course you choose to study.

Secure English Language Tests (SELTs)

If you are applying for a Tier 4 student visa and you are not a national of a majority English speaking country, you will need to take a test, recognised by the Home Office, to prove your English language ability. This is called a Secure English Language Test (SELT).

The SELT gives you a score in the four categories of listening, reading, writing, and speaking, as well as an overall score.

The SELT is valid for two years. If you take a test more than two years before the start of your course, you will not be able to use it and will have to take the test again.

What test you should take

If you applying for a foundation or international foundation course, you must take the ‘IELTS for UKVI’ test. If you are taking the test in the UK, you can also take the ‘Trinity ISE’ test.

If you are applying for a Bachelor or Master degree, you should take the ‘IELTS for UKVI’ test where possible. However, you can also take the ‘IELTS Academic’ test if you think you will be able to achieve the required scores for an unconditional offer. If you are taking the test in the UK, you can also take the ‘Trinity ISE’ test.

If you have recently completed a bachelor degree in a majority English-speaking country as defined by the Home Office, you may not be required to take an English language test.

If you are applying for a pre-sessional English course, you must take the ‘IELTS for UKVI’ test. We may be able to accept ‘IELTS Academic’, if you are able to achieve a score of at least 5.5 in each of the listening, reading, writing, and speaking categories. If you are taking the test in the UK, you can also take the ‘Trinity ISE’ test.

If you are not sure which test to take, we advise you to book an ‘IELTS for UKVI’ test.

For visa purposes, you can only take an IELTS test at an authorised centre. When you book your test, you must specify what the test is for and make sure that the centre is authorised to run tests for this purpose.

What scores you need

The level of English language skills you need to have depends on the course you want to take. Please see the table below for the details for your chosen course.

What you can do if you do not meet the requirements

If you have not met the English language requirements for your course, you could consider taking our pre-sessional English course.
